For decades, until he retired 17 years ago, Mr. Wile was co-chief executive officer of Julius Wile Sons & Company, a wine and spirits importing firm founded in 1877 by his grandfather, the first Julius Wile, who immigrated from Alsace as a 14-year-old boy in 1840
.
Mr. Wile said his grandfather had five sons, all of whom were in the business. "My dad was Irwin, and he used to take me to the office when I was very young," he said. "Later on, I worked for the company during the summer. And it was my uncle Alphonse who arranged for me to go abroad and learn the wine business firsthand."
In 1936, Mr. Wile recalled, he graduated from New York University with a degree in aeronautical engineering. "Of course, it was the height of the Depression and there were no engineering jobs to be had, so I went into the family firm, which actually suited me very well," he said.
Mr. Wile returned from France when World War II broke out. He recalled that the war "cut off our suppliers and so we received permission from one of them, Garnier in France, to produce Garnier cordials here, which, of course, we formerly imported, and that was helpful. And we also looked to California for wines."
